How to Keep Your Carpet Clean in the Winter Months

During the winter, there are added elements that can dirty and damage your carpets. Tracking in snow, ice, mud, salt, and water only accelerates the rate at which your carpet accumulates nasty buildup. You and your family can use these simple tips to help keep your carpets clean and keep them looking and feeling fresh during the cold months.

Remove Shoes and Wipe Pets Paws

Make it a habit to remove your shoes at the door before walking about your home. Encourage those who enter your home to also remove their shoes. This small action can greatly reduce dirt and stains from accumulating on your carpet while minimizing the wear and tear your carpet may endure.

If you have pets that go outside like cats or dogs, clean and dry their paws before they return inside. Mud, dirt, and snow can get trapped in their fur. If they tend to roll around outside, wipe them off so they don’t roll the outside elements around your home.

Use Mats, Runners, and Rugs

Place doormats at each entrance of your home, inside and outside. Wiping your feet off and encouraging family members and guests to wipe their feet off will remove excess dirt, snow, and other debris from the shoes of people entering your home. In high traffic areas of your home like hallways, use runners and rugs in order to prevent wear and tear on your carpet.

Vacuum Frequently

Many people tend to stay inside during the winter months because of the cold. This means more accumulation of dead skin particles, dust bunnies, and other unpleasant grime. In order to stay ahead of this, vacuuming more frequently during the winter will help prevent the winter grime from accumulating and traveling to other parts of your home. How frequently should you vacuum in the winter? Once a week is a good rule of thumb but it depends on how dusty your home is or if you have pets.

Clean your Porch and Patio

Keep the areas just outside your home clean in order to help prevent dirt and debris from being tracked into your home. Whether it’s snow or leaves, make sure to sweep and shovel your front porch, back patio, garage, and areas outside of all the entrances of your home on a regular basis.

Spot Clean

When something is spilled on your carpet, clean it up immediately to prevent the spot from turning into an unpleasant stain. Sticky spots accumulate dirt more rapidly and can be much more difficult to clean later on. Sometimes stains appear out of nowhere and should also be cleaned up as soon as possible to keep your carpets looking clean. Not sure how to clean up a stain?
